Writing a Contractor CV That Gets You Interviews

A contractor CV is fundamentally different from a permanent employee CV. Clients hiring contractors want to see evidence of specific deliverables, technical expertise, and the ability to make an impact quickly. Here is how to structure yours.

Lead with a skills summary

Start with a concise professional summary of two to three sentences stating your core specialism, years of experience, and key technologies. Follow this with a clearly formatted skills matrix or keyword list that recruiters and hiring managers can scan in seconds. Many contracts are filled based on keyword matching, so ensure your CV includes the specific technologies and methodologies you are proficient in.

Structure each contract clearly

For each contract, include the client name (or sector if under NDA), your role title, the contract dates and duration, the IR35 status if outside, the technologies used, and three to five bullet points describing what you delivered. Focus on outcomes rather than responsibilities. Instead of "Responsible for cloud infrastructure", write "Migrated 40 microservices from on-premises to AWS EKS, reducing hosting costs by 35 percent over six months."

Keep it recent and relevant

Detail your last three to five years of contracts comprehensively. Older experience can be summarised briefly. Clients care most about what you have done recently and whether your current skills match their requirements. A detailed description of a project from eight years ago using obsolete technology adds little value.

Formatting matters

Keep your CV to two or three pages. Use a clean, professional layout with clear headings and consistent formatting. Avoid graphics, columns, or fancy designs that may not render correctly when parsed by applicant tracking systems. Submit in both PDF and Word format unless the agency specifies a preference.

Tailor for each application

Adjust your skills summary and the emphasis of your recent contracts to match the specific requirements of each role. A one-size-fits-all CV is less effective than one that clearly addresses the client's stated needs. This takes five to ten minutes per application and significantly improves your response rate.
