Finding Your First IT Contract: A Practical Guide

Making the leap from permanent employment to contracting is one of the biggest career decisions an IT professional can make. The potential rewards are significant, with higher earnings, greater flexibility, and broader experience, but the transition requires planning.

When are you ready?

Most successful contractors have at least three to five years of solid experience in their field before making the move. Clients hire contractors for their expertise, not to train them. You should be confident that you can walk into a new environment and deliver value from week one. If your skills are in high demand, such as cloud engineering, DevOps, data engineering, or cybersecurity, the transition is typically smoother.

Building your financial buffer

Before leaving permanent employment, save at least three months of living expenses. Contractor income is not guaranteed, and there will be gaps between contracts. Having a financial buffer reduces pressure to accept unsuitable contracts and gives you time to find the right opportunity.

Setting up your company

Register a limited company, open a business bank account, appoint an accountant, and arrange insurance. This can all be done while still in permanent employment so that you are ready to start contracting immediately when the right opportunity appears.

Finding your first contract

Register with specialist IT recruitment agencies. Upload your CV to job boards including LinkedIn, JobServe, and Reed. Update your LinkedIn profile to signal that you are available for contract work. Reach out to your professional network, as many contracts are filled through referrals before they are advertised publicly. Attend meetups and conferences in your technology area to build connections.

Your first contract

Do not be overly selective with your first contract. Focus on getting established, building your contracting CV, and proving you can deliver in a contract environment. A strong first contract with good references opens doors to better opportunities. Once you have six to twelve months of contracting experience, you will find it much easier to secure higher-rate roles.
