Security Clearance for Contractors: SC and DV Clearance Explained

Security clearance is required for contractor roles in government, defence, intelligence, and certain regulated industries. Holding active security clearance significantly expands your available market and typically commands a premium on your day rate.

Levels of clearance

The UK government operates several levels of security vetting. The most relevant for contractors are Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), Security Check (SC), and Developed Vetting (DV). BPSS is the entry level and can usually be completed in days. SC clearance requires a more detailed background check and typically takes four to eight weeks. DV clearance is the highest standard, involving extensive investigation into your background, finances, and personal relationships, and can take three to twelve months.

How clearance affects your day rate

SC cleared contractors typically command a premium of £50–£100 per day over their non-cleared equivalent. DV cleared contractors can command even higher premiums, particularly in niche technology areas. The premium exists because the pool of cleared contractors is limited, and clients cannot simply clear anyone they choose; the process is controlled by the government vetting authority.

Getting cleared as a contractor

You cannot apply for security clearance independently. A sponsoring organisation, typically your end client or their prime contractor, must request clearance on your behalf. The sponsoring organisation submits a vetting request, and you complete an extensive questionnaire covering your personal history, finances, travel, and relationships. You must be a UK national or meet specific residency requirements depending on the clearance level.

Maintaining your clearance

SC clearance is valid for five years, and DV clearance for seven years, provided it remains active. If there is a gap of more than 12 months between sponsored engagements, your clearance may lapse and require renewal. This is why many cleared contractors prioritise continuity in government or defence contracts to maintain their active status.
